Fremantle Sailing Clubs famous hospitality offset at least a little of the damp/blustery conditions the crews of 11
S&S34's observed from FSC's balcony just prior to the start of the
27th Commodores Trophy Race. By the time the luncheon and wine had been
polished off (one brave crew actually took a bottle of red out with them - not
sure how much of that got drunk!) the wind had lifted to 17-20 knots and it
didn't take long for the fleet to get from the shelter of the marina to the
start line just off Fremantle harbour.
After a few quick tacks for the Commodores to get used to the boats in the lumpy swell, so typical at this time
of year, the warning gun went off. Tactics, as always, play a major part
of a yacht race pre-start and today was no different; Delphis
(Commodore Maurice Cooper, SoPYC) thought the gun was a 10 minute warning so headed
off towards Rottnest Island instead of the start line, Constellation (Commodore
Greg Hill, NYC) reached to the pin end of the line in an attempt to get clean
air on a port start, yet it was SuperStar (Commodore Greg O'Bryan, EFYC) who timed the start to perfection and got the drop on the rest of the fleet with a near perfect starboard start (where is that best
start trophy??).
Unfortunately Commodore O'Bryan's advantage wasn't to last long and by the first mark he had slipped down the
fleet as the usual racers easily overhauled him. Slight navigational
errors in laying the top mark upset the first half of the fleet thus giving the
tail enders a chance to make up a little of the gap.
A rolling run back to the leeward mark made for interesting tracks as the
Commodores struggled against the quarter seas that did everything possible to
prevent steerage in the desired direction.
Despite, allegedly, undergoing an extensive pre-race training program with much tactical support from the rest of
his flag officers, our host Commodore (Garry Webb, FSC) sadly had to retire
without completing the first lap. I believe his re-election hopes are now resting on extensive damage control at the yacht
club bar!
A second lap in gradually increasing wind and swell managed to soak any remaining dry crew members but
also resulted in smiles all round for the nominated Skipper/Commodores; I
think all of them were impressed with the solid handling of the S&S34 in such
challenging conditions. Once back in the club house tall stories were
exchanged and tea and cakes consumed prior to the results and presentations.
Commodore Tim Anderson (PFS) sailing Arwen collected the Commodores Trophy which is
an excellent result after receiving the 'Two Knot Trophy' last year (i.e. if he
sailed 2 knots faster he may have won). Commodore Maurice Cooper (SoPYC) was this years recipient of the
'Two Knot Trophy' for, well averaging about two knots around the course. Maybe next year....!!
Guy and Nicola Bessell-Browne, owners of Arwen, collected the 'David & Kathleen Walters Memorial Trophy'. This is the second year the trophy has been presented in memory of our great friends who are very much missed here in WA.

SS34 - SS34 26th Annual Commodores Race - 9/4/2006 - Results - Commentary - "Swagman" drew Commodore Colin Hall from EFYC, who as a dinghy & keelboat sailor was a perfect selection. We started with a hammering pin end start on port tack. With the first mark just cracked off to windward, most other boats unaware of the location of marks started on the traditional starboard tack. This meant we were ahead from the start. Initially we headedg too high for the first mark, but this did not lose us much time, with RPYC Commodore Tony Carter on "Constellation" rounding about 30-45 seconds behind us. "Constellation" was right on our stern half way on the run between the second and third mark, and overtook us with its superior sail wardrobe just before the fifth mark. From then on it was a procession, with "Constellation" not pulling out much more than 1 minute right to the finish. That put us in second across the line a couple of minutes in front of Perie Banou III and Superstar. Our Commodore Colin Hall was award the Best Start flag, as well as finishing 1st overall, picking up the Commodores Cup for 2006. The skipper of Swagman (Andrew Waldby) was awarded the inaugural "David & Kathleen Walters Memorial Trophy" as the owner of the winning boat, in rememberance of these two great SS34 Association members and friends who tragically lost their lives doing what they loved doing sailing their SS34 "Bird of the Morning" off Rottnest Island. As the owner I would like to thank Commodore Colin Hall for doing a fantastic job at skippering and allowing me to suggest most of the tactical shots, my son Brett Waldby & Simon Torvaldsen for crewing and helping with bringing the boat up and down the river. This is a huge achievement for Swagman being the 3rd boat (with Perie Banou III & Delphis) to win 3 Commodores Races, and I am very proud to have received the inaugural memorial trophy from the Walter's family.

SoPYC - Night Race - 20/1/2006 - Results - A disappointing turn out for the night race was only matched by poor organization. Contradictory sailing instructions and a no show by the starters led to confusion on the few boats that made the start line, but despite all that SuperStar and Swagman had an interesting race and didn't fall too far behind the two Thompson sports boats they were pitted against. SuperStar got the drop on Swagman with a smoother spinnaker launch at the delayed start, however Andrew easily passed Tim on the long beat up to Point Resolution. Both boats suffered in the gusty conditions that tend to be prevalent when rounding Point Walter, but managed the short beat to the windward mark just off Meads Restaurant without incident (though there was a close call between SuperStar, one of the Thompson's and the Point Walter sand bank!). Swagman elected to reach back to Como under white sails only giving SuperStar a chance to make up the gap under main and asymmetric. Unfortunately both boats had trouble finding the final mark and by mutual consensus both hardened up beam to beam for the short sprint to the finish line, Swagman's superior upwind performance took the line with just a few seconds to spare. Despite the issues surrounding the race both crews had an excellent evening out on the river and are looking forward to the next opportunity to race again. (by Timbo Dallas)

RPYC - International Paints Trophy - 12/11/2005 - Results - Consistency - We had an inexperienced crew this weekend, and therefore didnt fly a spinnaker, plus we were 4 minutes late for the start. So, it didnt make for a good day, however we did sail well.
RPYC - Tasker's Trophy - 5/11/2005 - Results - Consistency - We had minimal crew this weekend, with just Brad, Brett & my daughter Alysha, so we didnt fly spinnakers, and only used the No.3 jib against the rest of the division. So we had to do everything right and pick all the shifts, which is what we did, and were 5 minutes ahead by the first mark, and only keeping fastest by 1 minute 30 seconds at the finish.

RPYC - Opening Day - 8/10/2005 - Results - Great race to start the new season, especially with the new crew. Brad did an outstanding job on the foredeck after being thrown in at the deep end. Antony and Simon T worked together well as new crew. The first fastest of the season was great, and despite the harsh handicap we finished with a credible corrected position.
